Can Cavities Occur with Dental Implants?

If you have – or have ever considered – dental implants, you understandably might have some questions. A common question we receive at The Center for Oral Surgery of Las Vegas is, “Can cavities occur with dental implants?” It’s a great question, and we’re happy to report that technically, no, dental implants cannot get cavities. However, it’s not so simple! While a cavity within your implant isn’t possible, there are still other risks to consider. Luckily, with proper maintenance and attention, dental implants should be problem-free!

Keeping Dental Implants Healthy

If you’re not sure what a dental implant is, you’ve come to the right place. Dr. Letelier and the staff at the Center for Oral Surgery of Las Vegas are experts in dental implants and take our role seriously when it comes to oral health education. A dental implant is a replacement for a missing tooth. It consists of an artificial tooth root typically made of titanium. After insertion into healthy jaw bone, it fuses with the surrounding bone to create a sturdy base that a dental crown is placed on. The final result looks, feels, and acts like a natural tooth and with the right care an implant can last a lifetime.

Since every aspect of the dental implant is man-made, there is no risk of a cavity within the implant itself. However, the gums and natural teeth that surround the implant are as susceptible as always to bacteria and decay, and if left untreated can eventually cause issues for your implant as well.  A common concern when it comes to implant-related complications is a gum-related issue known as peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis is an infection that takes place in the gums around the implant, featuring inflammation and bone loss. When this happens, the involvement of the implant-supporting bone structure can cause the implant to fail.

Fortunately, such a problem can easily be avoided with a bit of care and effort. Peri-implantitis and other oral health concerns can often be directly attributed to poor oral hygiene. To prevent implant complications, prioritize oral health by:

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice daily with a soft toothbrush.
  • Floss at least once per day.
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash at least once a day.
  • Schedule regular dental appointments for evaluations and professional cleanings.

Committing to impeccable oral hygiene will help rid the mouth of bacteria to avoid plaque buildup that leads to decay and infection.
